SUMMARY:Camp Ruapehu (Oct School Holidays)
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: The government decision on Monday 21st September was great news for the team! Although Auckland will be under Level 2 restrictions\, the Ruapehu region will be reduced to Level 1. \n\n\n\nWhat does this mean? \n\n\n\nThere will be no capacity restrictions up on Turoa and Whakapapa (which have been in place under Level 2)\n\n\n\nAlso\, some other exciting updates: \n\n\n\nBookable parking for 2020 ends on Sunday 27th September. This means that from Monday 28th September there will be no more bookable parking for Turoa or Whakapapa and parking will operate on a ‘first in\, first served basis’Turoa lifts are now all up and running for the rest of the season (including the Nga Wai Heke Quad Chairlift)Whakapapa lifts are all up and running except the Far West chair and T-Bar. The team are currently working on the Far West T-Bar with an aim to get it up and running this season!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us down at Ruapehu for week one of the school holidays!The team will be based in Ohakune for the duration of the camp\, although our plan for training consists of 4 x days of freeski training\, plus 3 x days of training on Whakapapa which provisionally will include 3 hours of training in a course each morning followed by freeski training in the afternoon. \n\n\n\nThe duration of the camp will be coached by Justin Stoddard & Duane Barakat. Additionally\, Adrian Farnsworth will be joining us for the Saturday and Sunday race training up on Whakapapa. There will be a combination of GS and Slalom training throughout  with training and drills tailored to the different levels of the athletes. \n\n\n\nCamp Ruapehu calendar: \n\n\n\nMon 28th Sep – Training day (Turoa)Tue 29th Sep – Training day (Turoa)Wed 30th Sep – Training day (Turoa)Thu 1st Oct – Training day (Turoa)Fri 2nd Oct – Race course training day (Whakapapa)Sat 3rd Oct – Race course training day (Whakapapa)Sun 4th Oct – Race course training day (Whakapapa)\n\n\n\nBooking applications are open now!Spaces are limited for this camp. This 15-minute session is an opportunity to discuss expectations around the camp and to agree on training objectives (tailored to the age and ability of the athlete). Training day coaching.Off-snow activities for bad weather days\, off-snow afternoons and evenings will be arranged for athletes and families.  We have heaps of options up our sleeve for different scenarios.Post-camp debrief with each athlete individually\, prior to departing Christchurch\, will allow us to review progress against the athlete’s pre-camp objectives. Subsequently a written post-camp report will be prepared and shared with the athlete.\n\n\n\nWhat’s Not Included:\n\n\n\nLift Passes for Mt Ruapehu.Accommodation at Ohakune.We have negotiated a special deal for pricing with the team at Ruapehu Mountain Motel & Lodge in Ohakune.The facilities at this accommodation option are great\, with an indoor spa\, a large common area with TV and a pool table.Please note: To get the below special rates\, you must call the Leigh and Kevin on 0800 470 480 and mention that you are with Northern Ski Team.Alpine Motel Unit (1 x Queen\, 3 x Singles)$145 for 2 people + $25 per additional personEnsuite Room (1 x Queen\, 1 x Single)$112 for 2 people + $25 per additional personThere are a very limited number of alternative room options available\, however please contact Leigh and Kevin directly to get more information on these.Accommodation at National Park.For those of you planning to join us primarily for lane training up on Whakapapa\, staying in National Park might be your best option. The team at The Park in National Park have been awesome in offering Northern Ski Team families a discount of 15% off their rack rates for room bookings through until the end of 2021.In addition\, they have offered us a super-flexible cancellation policy and will allow free cancellation and changes to bookings up until 72 hours prior to arrival date. For changes or cancellations within 72 hours\, the first nights accommodation will be charged in full.Meals throughout the camp. The above Alpine Motel Unit option at Ruapehu Mountain Motel & Lodge does have a kitchenette\, so this is a great option for families. The lodge does also have a large communal kitchen that can be used by guests. Alternatively\, Ohakune has plenty of good food options.Transport throughout the camp. UPDATE: From Monday 28th September onwards\, parking bookings are no longer required for Whakapapa or Turoa ski fields for the rest of 2020. Parking will operate on a ‘first in\, first served’ basis.This is great news for us! Assuming the camp proceeds\, we have a strict ‘no refunds’ policy for this camp (including for bad weather days). This policy is due to the fixed-costs associated with running these camps.If the camp does not proceed for any reason\, we will provide 100% refund on all payments made to Northern Ski Team.In the scenario of bad weather days\, we will run an alternative day of off-snow training and activities.   Are chaperone opportunities available? For this camp\, we are able to chaperone 4 x athletes. However\, chaperone is by application only and the final decision is at the sole discretion of the NST executive committee.The chaperone cost for this camp is $150 per night\, which includes:– Accommodation– Dinner & breakfast– Transport– Adult supervision throughout the campTo discuss chaperone options\, please email us at theteam@northernskiteam.co.nz and we will call you to discuss further.   What do I need to bring? Gear you NEED to bring:– Helmet & goggles– Slalom skis and/or GS skis. If the athlete only has 1 pair a kombi or slalom ski is best– Poles. If they are bugging athletes before we go\, get them sorted– Training suit and shortsOPTIONAL gear:– Chin guard (optional). Chin Guards should be removed for GS training– Arm Guards (optional – soccer shin guards work well)– Tuning equipment– Rugby style mouth guard (optional)– Snow boots (optional)In the ATHLETE DAY PACK:Athletes should bring a small pack each day.
